Tarot Card Meanings > Major Arcana > The Magician

The magician tarot card represents masculine creative energy. The usual imagery is a robed mystic or wizard at an altar with the tools of his trade: wand, pentacle, sword, and cup. This represents his mastery of elemental nature and his ability to control his fate through the esoteric understanding of tarot symbols. He is what the Fool becomes once lessons are learned and experiences lead to greater understanding. The tools the Fool carried in his satchel are now instuments laid out for purpose. Below you can view the various artistic interpretations of The Magician card.

The Magician

The Magician is one of the magi: a seeker of the secrets of the stars.

He is the Wise Fool, about to begin the cosmic odyssey,
the journey beyond the world.

This is the magic trick of pulling your “self” out of the hat.
Are you innocent? Are you eager?
Pure as a newborn babe?
Strong as a warrior?
This is the step-by-step evolution of the human spirit towards joyful maturity.

This is the journey of alchemical self-transformation;
the search for the Holy Grail; the return to Shangri La.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man symbolizes our search for human perfection. As above so below.

The rainbow is the bridge between earth and heaven.
The magician is enthralled at the prospect of the awesome journey ahead.
This is a pause for assessment.

The Rod, the Cup, the Blade, and the Coin; representing the conscious body, the open heart, the clear mind, and the mature spirit — these are the tools for making the journey.

What do you need in order to begin your journey?
Are you ready to enter the realm of the inner life?
To explore the last frontier?
Are you prepared? Will you say YES?!
